G002590 M1915 STICK/PERCUSSION GRENADE (Inert/Deactivated).

BACKGROUND: Although the M1915 Stielhandgranate was a success, the German's attempted to modify it so it would explode on impact rather than at the end of the 5 1/2 or 7 seconds fuse. The result was the M1915 Stielhandgranate Perkussion (stick hand grenade percussion). Apparently most of these surviving Stielhandgranate Perkussion came out of a German dug-out that had collapsed and was excavated in the 1970s where a number of M1915 Stielhandgranate Perkussion were found. All are in various states of decay, some worse than others.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: This example is in quite good condition. The other side of the lever is missing some of the side where the pin sticks out due to corrosion. I think after they were cleaned up, they were lacquered to stop further rust and decay which worked quite well. They are quite expensive and very difficult to find. It is a monster with a massive head that contained 270 gm Ammonium Nitrate (high explosive). You can make out the detonator instructions on the bottom of the can in thick white (at one time) paint: "VOR GEBRAUCH SPRENGKAPSEL EINSETZEN". The later models also had a label on the side. The impact igniter function is quite ingenious. The spoon that rests in the thrower's hand is under pressure from a strong spring. When the pin is pulled and the grenade is thrown, the springs shoots the lever instantly upwards which pivots on an axial pin which then pushes the front claw downwards on a smaller lever. That small lever which is also mounted on an axial pin, rotates which pulls the safety out, arming the internal igniter mechanism which strikes the detonator on impact. Rare!
