G002290 M15 BALL GRENADE (Inert/Deactivated). (Kugelhandgranate)
BACKGROUND: In 1915 a simplified Kugelhandgranate was introduced which was roughly cast to increase and simplify production. Other than being roughly cast with external squaring to assist with fragmentation the M1915 Kugelhandgranate was identical to the earlier M1913 Kugelhandgranate and utilized the same brass igniters.
Both models of the Kugelhandgranaten were very reliable but difficult to use in combat as their weight (1 kg) restricted the throw to typically no more than 15 meters. In order to increase the range, a brass adapter was developed to allow the handle of the M1915 Stielhandgranate Perkussion (stick hand grenade percussion) to be mated to the Kugelhandgranate, however, these were not very successful. Another attempt to increase range was with a panier (carrier) that made them easier to arm and throw. In 1915 in order to save brass, igniters were introduced made from zinc, which would fit both patterns of the Kugelhandgranaten and the smaller M1917 Eierhandgranaten (egg hand grenades).
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: M1915 Kugelhandgranate. Excellent example, nice and clean and in superb condition. Like almost all surviving Kugelhandgranaten the igniter wire on this example is lost to time.
