G001192 AUSTRO/HUNGARIAN FIELD UNIFORM GROUPING.
A grouping consisting of a visorless cap, field gray jacket, and medal bar. The visorless cap features a bullion rosette to the front of the cap with “FJ1” (for Franz Joseph I) and plain buttons. The cap is lined in red cotton with a cotton sweatband.
Some fading to the top of the crown of the cap. The field gray jacket features a seven-button concealed front closure that leads to a stand-up collar with a pair of hooks and eyelets. The collar insignia represents the rank of Generalmajor. A braided, sewn in officer’s shoulder strap is to the left of the collar, held in place by a small gilded button that bears a crossed cannon and saber with three cannon balls (Artillery). Each straight cuff bears a small button. Sewn above the left breast pocket are woolen threads that hold a seven place medal bar containing a Military Merit Cross, third class with swords; a Karl-Truppenkreuz Medal; a Wound Medal for the disabled (no stripes); an Officer’s Military Service Decoration, Third Class; an Austrian WW1 Commemorative Medal “Fur Osterreich,” with swords (for combatants); a Mobilization Cross 1912-1913 and a 1914/18 Hungarian Combatant’s Commemorative Service medal. The interior is fully lined with a white oil tag sewn to the breast pocket that bears the owner’s name and the date August 24, 1916 (written as 24/8/6.) The officer’s name appears to be Major Brichta. There was a man named Brichta, of Czech origin, living in the U.S. (according to the census) after the war, of the right age to have been in the Austrian army. He could be researched if the owner cares to write to the War Archives (Kriegsarchiv) in Vienna, which holds Austrian military records.
CONDITION: Jacket shows some fraying to collar interior, otherwise excellent. No
mothing whatsoever. The cap shows some rust stains, apparently resulting from
previously attached pins. Back of rosette is very slightly frayed. Medal bar is
excellent. A rare grouping.
