H73053 POW STALAG DOG TAG. (Gefangener Erkennungsmarken)

BACKGROUND: Allied soldiers captured by the Germans were incarcerated in assorted prisoner of war detention camps through-out Germany and the occupied countries. With typical German efficiency the POW’s were issued identification "dog" tags as a method of accounting for and administrating the prisoners in an orderly fashion. If a prisoner died in captivity half the dog tag would stay attached to the individual and the other half would be sent to the appropriate administrative offices for processing. "Stalag IV-B was one of the largest prisoner-of-war camps in Germany during World War II, located 8 km (5.0 mi) north-east of the town of Mühlberg. It held Polish, French, British, Australian, Soviet, Yugoslav, South African, Italian and other Allied prisoners of war." (Wiki)
