H078960 MOUNTAIN TROOPS/MEDICAL CANTEEN & CUP
. (Feld/Labeflasche für Gebirgsjäger und Sanitäts Truppe)BACKGROUND: During WWII the German army fielded nine Mountain Divisions with an additional six Waffen-SS Mountain Divisions. Generally speaking the Mountain Divisions were specially trained and equipped Infantry Divisions designed for mountainous warfare. Each Division in the German Army of WWII also had Divisional Support units which included a medical unit that normally consisted of two companies, a mobile field hospital and two ambulance platoons. Although the .8 liter capacity, M31 canteens were the standard issue canteen, mountain troops and medical personnel were issued a larger, one and a half to two liter capacity canteen that was based on the larger canteens used by their WWI counterparts. These larger mountain troops/medical canteens were of identical design to the standard M31 canteens but came equipped with a different carrying harness and shoulder strap assembly. Originally the mountain troops/medical canteens were manufactured in aluminum but later as the aluminum was required for other more critically essential items the canteens began to be manufactured in steel. With potable fluids being such an essential item for an individuals well-being the mountain troops/medical canteen must be considered as a very important piece of kit. Of Note: It appears that the mountain troops/medical canteens were also produced in aluminum during the Weimar Reichswehr, (National Defence Force, Circa 1919-1933), era as this example is dated, "29", (1929).
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Standard issue, 1 1/2 liter capacity, tooled natural aluminum construction mountain troops and medical personnel’s canteen with a black painted, tooled, aluminum cup and a blackened leather harness with alloy fittings. The roughly, 8 3/4" tall, 6 1/2" wide, 3 1/4" thick, vertically oval, tooled, natural aluminum construction canteen is contained in a slightly mottled, brownish felt cover with four, black painted, alloy, closure snaps, machine stitched seams and a multi-piece, vertical and horizontal blackened leather carrying harness. The blackened leather harness consists of four, vertical, straps with one positioned to the center of both the obverse and reverse and one to each side. The four, vertical, straps are all stitched to a fifth, horizontal, strap situated just below the throat of the canteen. The vertical straps to the obverse and sides all have a blacked painted, pronged, alloy, roller buckles while the vertical strap to the reverse was designed to secure the cup to the top of the canteen with the pronged roller buckle on the obverse. The reverse, vertical strap also has an additional cap retaining strap, rivetted onto the screw off canteen cap and a rivetted on alloy belt support hook. The buckles to the vertical, side, straps were to secure the separate, detachable shoulder strap. The separate, detachable shoulder strap is absent. All four vertical straps have an additional, blacked painted, pronged, alloy roller buckle where the straps overlap at the bottom center of the canteen. The canteen has a tooled, natural aluminum, screw on cap with vertical ribbing to the top edge and a, rivetted on, leather retaining strap all intact. The canteen comes complete with a black painted, tooled aluminum construction, 1/4 liter capacity cup. The roughly, 3" tall, vertically, cylindrical, cup has a 3" x 2 3/4" outwardly fluted, oval mouth with a rolled back lip to the top edge, a raised, brazed on, strap retaining bracket to the obverse and a 1 3/4" diameter bottom. The cup retains about 55% of its black paint with large spots of wear to the base aluminum. The body of the canteen, has the impressed date, "29" but the canteen and all the components have no visible manufacturer’s markings. The canteen and cover are in overall fairly good condition with minor age and usage toning but the leather straps have stiffened with age and show some light surface cracking.
