(Unterhose)BACKGROUND: The standard issue, winter underwear set originally consisted of natural, off-white, woven cotton/tricot blend long pants and a long sleeve crew neck T-shirt. The nature of the material and the weave made both the pants and shirt quite "stretchy" enabling them to fit a variety of different sizes. This underwear was issued to all EM/NCO personnel during the winter months, (September to April), and was to be returned to stores at the end of the season and reissued the following year. Shortly after the out-break of the war the underwear was modified by dyeing it green.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Early, natural, unbleached, off-white, ribbed knit cotton/tricot blend construction long underpants. The pants feature a dual ply, woven, off-white tricot waistband with a scalloped tip to the front center. The pants have three vertically aligned closure buttons to the front center, positioned above an open fly. The reverse center of the waistband has the typical small, "V" slash with two stitched fit adjustment tie tapes intact. Each pleated cuff have a ersatz pressed cardboard button with corresponding button hole to allow for a snug fit. Each cuff, as well as the waistband is marked "LAII." The pants are in overall good condition with minimal age toning. The buttons are the ersatz pressed cardboard type and appear to have their original stitching. The pants are roughly size 32" waist with a 26.5" breech.
