H054170 CASED EYE GLASSES SOAP. (Augengläser Seife im Etui)

BACKGROUND: With the reintroduction of conscription in March 1935, recruits were required to register at the nearest recruitment center where a physical examination, including an eye examination, was conducted to evaluate their suitability for active service. If found suitable the recruit would be inducted into active service and if visually impaired, issued the appropriate, prescription, vision correction, service eye glasses. The German army also issued special vision correcting glasses that were designed to fit beneath the gasmask when worn. The gasmask glasses followed the same basic design as the standard issue corrective vision glasses but replaced the metal arms with fabric tapes enabling them to be worn under the gasmask when required. This soap seems to have been intended for both the standard service corrective vision glasses, the gas mask glasses and the lenses of the gasmask.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 6cm x 4cm x 2cm tooled magnetic alloy sheet metal constructed case with a fold back top lid. The case has a horizontal bar hinge to the reverse and a raised friction fit closure lip to the obverse. The case houses a roughly, 5.5cm tall glass vial with a cork stopper containing a cellophane and foil wrapped stick of soap. Also included is a white cotton cleaning cloth and a white paper instruction sheet with black printed script in both German and French. The soap was produced by the "Kriegstechnische Abteilung", (War Technical Department).
