H051290 CASED GASMASK GLASSES. (Masken-Brille mit Brillenfutteral)

BACKGROUND: With the development of poisonous gasses used as offensive weapons in WWI appropriate defensive gasmasks also had to be developed. The German WWI M1915 and M1917 gasmasks evolved into the Reichswehr era M24 gasmask and eventually into the M30 and M38 gasmasks used in WWII. All German Army personnel were issued with a gasmask, carrying canister and accessories and were required to have it readily available at all times. Although the use of chemical warfare agents was considered by the German OKW, (High Command of the Armed Forces), fear of the Allies retribution forced them to reconsider and shelf the idea. Fear of the potential use of chemical warfare agents made the gasmask and canister a constant companion of the German soldier through-out the war. One of the gasmask accessories issued to all visually impaired personnel were special vision correcting glasses that were designed to fit beneath the gasmask when worn. The gasmask glasses followed the same basic design as the standard issue corrective vision glasses but replaced the metal arms with fabric tapes enabling them to be worn under the gasmask when required.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The matte grey painted, magnetic sheet metal construction eye glasses frames feature dual circular eye sockets, an integral nose bridge and dual hinged plates to either side for the fabric tape "arms". The dual hinged side plates each have four vertical slashes to secure the fabric tape arms. The loosely woven grey cotton tape arms are included. The fabric arms are inserted through both the top and bottom vertical slashes of the hinged side plates creating loops to be secured around the wearers ears. The glasses come complete with clear, prescription, corrective vision lenses. The glasses come housed in their original, 13cm x 3cm x 2cm, matte grey painted, magnetic sheet metal case with black stenciled Gothic script to the top, "Masken-Brille", (Mask Glasses). The case has a friction fit, fold back top lid with an internal horizontal bar hinge to the reverse. The interior of the case contains a riveted in, protective cardboard panel with a blue chamois covering to the top.
