BACKGROUND: "Signal" magazines were first introduced in April 1940 as a bi-monthly magazine primarily containing articles and photographs compiled by German war correspondents and produced in Berlin by the Deutscher-Verlag, (German-Publishing House) under the auspices of the OKW, (Oberkommando der Wehrmacht, (High Command of the Armed Forces), with post-production censorship under the control of the Propaganda Ministry. Originally the magazine was intended to glorify the early German victories and encourage morale. Eventually the magazine was produced and distributed in at least twenty-five different languages and countries. Signal magazine was very popular and reached a subscription level of roughly two and one half million at its peak.
