H045680 BOX OF "GÜßSTOFF" SACCHARIN.
(Saccharin Etui)BACKGROUND: German army regulations authorized each combat soldier a daily food ration which was generally distributed from the units field kitchen but this wasn’t always possible in combat situations. As a result front line combat soldiers were to be supplied with a canned iron ration and some bread to be carried individually in the event that food from the field kitchen couldn’t reach their positions. Although regulations dictated the daily quantity of rations to be issued to each soldier it became increasingly difficult to meet the requirements as the war continued and any food became a valuable commodity for both armed forces and civilian personnel. Regulations prescribed that each soldier should receive four tablespoons of sugar daily but substitute artificial sweeteners, like Saccharin was also permitted when available.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 6.5m x 4.5cm x1.5cm natural tan mid-weight cardboard box of saccharin with blue printed Gothic script. The script to the obverse of the box includes the manufactures name, "Güßstoff", the contents of the box, "500 Tabletten Saccharin", and, "Zum Güßen aller Getränke wie Kaffee, Tee, Kokoa usw.", (Pour into all drinks such as Coffee, Tea, Cocoa etc.). The reverse of the box has printed script instructions for use and also includes "Verkauf nur gegen Rückgabe einer Leeren Packung", (Sale only in exchange for a returned empty package.). The sides of the box also have additional printed script, "Genehmigte Inlandpackung", (Native country packing approved). The box is in overall good condition with minor age yellowing.
