H042386 ARMY OFFICER'S "Eickhorn 1714 Freiherr Pattern" SABER. (Säbel)

BACKGROUND: The Sword/Sabre is an age old military tradition, that evolved from a functional weapon into an item of uniform dress ornamentation by the start of WWI. This strong tradition continues in many army’s to this day as a symbol of strength and power. After Hitler’s rise to power in 1933 and the reintroduction of conscription in early 1935 a wide variety of new sword and sabre designs were introduced to outfit the rapidly growing Wehrmacht.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Nice quality, private purchase Officer’s sabre featuring a roughly, 81cm long, slightly curved, nickel/silver plated, drop forged, steel construction blade with narrow, shallow, fullers running three quarters of the way up both sides of the blade. Maker marked to Eickhorn. The saber has die cast, alloy langets, cross guard, ferrule, "P", knuckle bow, back-strap and a "dove" pommel with a gilt finish. The obverse rounded tip, shield shaped langet has an engraved Wehrmacht pattern eagle with down-swept wings, clutching a canted swastika in it’s talons. The integral cross guard features a downward curved, curled tip to one side with a small, engraved, repeating acorn pattern and the base of the, "P", knuckle bow to other side. The knuckle bow, ferrule and back-strap all feature engraved oak-leave and acorn patterns. The saber has a contoured, molded, black, bakelite grip with a central bulge, and repeating, recessed, horizontal grooves with dual, inset, twisted wire wrap flanked at both the top and bottom edges with single strand wire. The saber comes with its original, black painted, tooled, sheet metal construction scabbard. Nice clean example!
