H038984 LIGHT FIELD HOWITZER AMMO CASE. (Feldhaubitzgranate Kasten) 

A nicely constructed, 17" x 13 1/2" x 6 1/2" natural wood ammo case with a tongue and groove slat top and dovetailed corner joints. Removable top lid has an internal dowel hinge. Lid is secured by an internal slat with a drilled hole and cotter pin retainer. A wooden slat is nailed to one end for the cotter pin and it also secures the rope carrying handle. Top lid has black stenciled script, "Kart le F.H.," for Kartatsche leichte FeldHaubitze, (Canister shot for light field howitzer), and "Heeres Munition Gesamtgew", (Army Munitions Total weight). One side of case has black stenciled script, "Oben" (Top). Case is also marked with a faint, impressed waffen-amt and the maker’s code "odb," for Tappe & Cosack. Interior of case has a slat to one side with three semi-circular cut-outs to secure the shells. The case would have held three shells for the M16, M18, or M18/40 light field howitzers.
