BACKGROUND: Originally the German army utilized two patterns of bayonet frogs with one pattern for unmounted personnel and another pattern with the addition of a horizontal retaining strap for mounted personnel. These frogs could be supplemented by private purchase frogs in patent leather for wear with the walking out and dress uniforms. 

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Private purchase blackened patent leather frog for unmounted personnel. Nicely maker marked. Comes with original Troddel still attached.
