H037195 K98 RIFLE GRENADE LAUNCHER ASSEMBLY TOOL. (Schlüssel für das Drallrohr)
BACKGROUND: The first German WWII rifle grenade launcher was a spigot type developed in 1941 in an attempt to provide anti tank capability to small infantry units but it proved ineffective and was discontinued in 1942. In early 1943 a second pattern, launcher cup type, rifle grenade launcher was introduced and utilized until the end of the war. The K98 grenade launcher kit consisted of a carrying pouch, sight, launcher with discharge cup and the assembly tool. At least eight different types of grenades were utilized with the launcher including anti personnel, anti tank, smoke, flare and propaganda leaflet grenades. The assembly tool was designed to fit on the grenade launcher discharge cup for tightening or loosening as required.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Blued, cast steel construction assembly tool is roughly 9" long with a cut out, 2 3/8" diameter circular head and three oval cut out slots in the handle. The tool has an all over, repeating embossed, hatch pattern for better grip. The tool has a faint, impressed, manufacturers code "clc" indicating manufacture by Richard Herder Solingen.
