H023194 5CM M36 LIGHT MORTAR ROUND
(Inert/Deactivated). (Leichter Granatewerfer Granate)
BACKGROUND: The German army developed and utilized a variety of different caliber mortars as the primary company and battalion level infantry support weapons. The first mortar developed during the Third Reich was the 8cm heavy mortar that was produced by the Rheinmetall munitions firm in 1932 and adopted by the OKH, Oberkommando des Heeres, (High Command of the Army), in 1934. Further developments through out the war brought about the 5cm light mortar, the 8cm short mortar, the 12cm heavy mortar, the 20cm light spigot mortar and the 38cm heavy spigot mortar among others. The 5cm light mortar was the main company level infantry support weapon and was developed in 1934 and officially adopted in 1936. The 5cm light mortar had a three man crew and an effective range of roughly 250 meters with a firing rate of fifteen to twenty five rounds per minute depending on the crew. Battlefield experience found the 5cm mortar shell to be too light and the limited firing range to be in adequate which resulted in further production being discontinued in late 1941 or early 1942 with the existing mortars being issued to second line and garrison troops and utilized for the duration of the war.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 21cm tall, tooled steel construction 5cm light mortar shell. The shell body widens out from tip and tapers back down into the cylindrical finned tail piece. The round still retains about 80% of its original protective, reddish/brown primer paint with light surface spotting. The round is profusely marked with black ink stamped and impressed markings.
