H018994 K98 RUBBER MUZZLE COVER. (Rohrmündung
Kappe)
BACKGROUND: The K98 rifle evolved from the WWI Mauser Gew 98 model with
slight modifications. The main modification was the shortening of the rifle. Due
to restrictions of the Versailles Treaty the K98, wasn’t actually produced in
Germany until 1934, although the Mauser company had licensed out production
rights to other European countries. When issued the K98 came accompanied with
assorted accessory items including a sling, a cleaning rod, a M34 cleaning kit
and a protective muzzle cover. Originally the muzzle covers were constructed in
tooled steel but they proved impractical as the muzzle cap had to be folded back
into the open position before the rifle could be fired. This problem was
overcome with the introduction of rubber muzzle covers which could be shot off
in the case of immediate use. After the introduction of the rubber muzzle covers
the manufacture of the earlier steel covers was discontinued.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 12mm tall, 18mm diameter, molded dark grey
rubber construction muzzle cover for the K98. The exterior of the cover has
three, evenly spaced, embossed vertical ribs for ease of handling and the
interior has horizontal ribbing to help to secure it on the K98 muzzle.
