H014890 TROPICAL PANZER GRENADIER SIGNAL PERSONNEL'S SLEEVE BADGE.
BACKGROUND:
EM/NCO personnel holding the ranks of Schütze to Stabsfeldwebel inclusively who had achieved proficiency at a particular trade, specialty or function were distinguished, on successful completion of the appropriate training, by being issued a distinctive trade specialty badge that was most commonly worn on the lower right sleeve of the service tunic or field blouse with a few exceptions. The original trade badges were introduced in 1934 and were supplemented with additional badges right up to mid-1944. In all the German army utilized no fewer then twenty-eight assorted trade specialty badges. Some of the trades were only open to enlisted ranks while those open to NCO’s ranks were distinguished by the addition of a piping on the trade badge. Originally the trade badges were worked on a blue/green badge cloth base, but in early 1940 this was altered to a field-grey wool base or the appropriate color of the uniform it was to be worn on. Accurate intelligence and secure lines of communication are crucial elements to all armies in the field and during WWII each division in the German Army had an integral Signals unit. The Signals unit were usually of Battalion strength and generally consisted of a Headquarters Company, a Radio Company and a Telephone Company. Besides the specific Signals personnel other branches of service also trained personnel to utilize a wide variety of radio receivers, field telephones and associated communications equipment in all theaters of operation. The different branches of service within the German army were allocated a specific, identifying waffenfarbe, (Branch of Service Color), with light blue being selected for Transport personnel. On the Signals trade badge the appropriate branch of service color was displayed as a "blitz" arrow. Of Note: The Signals trade badge was one of the exceptions and was to be worn on the upper left sleeve as opposed to most trade badges that were to be worn on the lower right sleeve.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Oval tan cotton base with machine embroidered, downward pointing blitz arrow in grass green threads. Oval base is trimmed in olive drab cotton. Reverse of badge has a greenish/tan protective cotton backing.
