H013195 FIELD RADIO REMOTE CONTROL SWITCH. (Fernbesprechungzubehör)
BACKGROUND: Accurate intelligence and secure lines of communication are crucial elements to all armies in the field and during WWII each division in the German Army had an integral Signals unit. The Signals unit were usually of Battalion strength and generally consisted of a Headquarters Company, a Radio Company and a Telephone Company. The Signals personnel utilized a wide variety of radio receivers, field telephones and associated communications equipment in all theaters of operation. Two of the most common communication sets were the Tornister Funkgerät b1 and the Tornister Funkgerät f, (Portable Radio sets models, b1 and f) and both came equipped with numerous accessories including a remote control switch box enabling the radio sets to be utilized from a distance.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 6 5/8" x 3" x 4 1/4", ordnance blue/grey painted, tooled alloy construction radio remote control switch box with molded black bakelite fittings. The switch has three field grey painted aluminum plates to the top edge with each plate having impressed script. One plate has the designation abbreviation, "Fbz. (bf)", indicating Fernbesprechungzubehör, (Remote Communication Accessory), model, "bf" and the serial number, "Nr. 33748", and the date, "41". One of the other plates is scripted, "Wenn Funkgerät auf "Empfang" oder "Aus", Fernsprechzusatz auf "Zwischenverkehr" schalten.", (When the radio set is at "Receive" or "On", the auxiliary telephone is open for direct intermediate communication.), and the final plate is scripted, "Ortsbespr.", (Local Communication), "Fernbespr.", (Remote Communication), and "Zwischen Verkehr", (Intermediate communication). The forward edge of the switch box has a three position, black bakelite switch and an additional scripted plate that reiterates the three operating options, "Ortsbespr.", "Fernbespr.", and "Zwischen Verkehr". The reverse edge of the switch box has a black bakelite dial to charge an internal induction magneto. One side of the switch box has three plug in outlets with a three prong outlet marked, "Mikrofon", (Microphone), a dual prong outlet marked, "Fern hörer", (Headphones) and an unmarked five prong outlet to connect it to the transmitter. Cord has been cut off from the other side. Scarce communications accessory.
