H013193 "COLONIES; A CHAPTER OF GERMAN HONOR" BOOK.

A 16.5cm x 24cm, 1938 hard cover German Colonial Yearbook and Calendar. The Treaty of Versailles confiscated all German colonies around the world after the First World War and put them under French or British protectorates. Demanding the return of the "lost colonies" became a rallying cry for German nationalists during the 1930’s, particularly among the colonial veterans organization, or Kolonial Kriegerverein. All sorts of lapel pins, posters and printed materials to keep the memory of the German colonies alive were produced and distributed. Annual calendars and yearbooks were particularly popular. This tan-cloth bound copy of Kolonien - ein Kapitel Deutscher Ehre ("Colonies - A Chapter of Germany’s Honor") of 1938 is a yearbook or annual published by the Wilhelm Sußerott Verlag of Berlin. It is an update on Germany’s former colonies, filled with articles, photographs and stories about the colonies during the past year and the doings of colonists of German descent in the former colonies. Thousands of German settlers either stayed in the former colonies (they were permitted to) and continued to run their farms and plantations, or moved there after World War 1 for the economic opportunities found there in agriculture and light manufacturing (such as the production of palm oil and hemp rope). Most yearbooks like this one were sent out in softcover, however this one has been hardbound for distribution to higher-ranking authorities and officials. Fascinating piece of German colonial history.
