BACKGROUND: As common practice, vehicles used during the Third Reich were required to have licence plates, by order of the Traffic Registration Laws, which covered military as well as civilian vehicles, excluding the heavier fighting vehicles such as tanks and self propelled artillery pieces, but including lighter fighting vehicles such as armoured cars and half tracks. Military licence plates were required to follow the Traffic Registration Laws, but were distributed by the appropriate Military command.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Stamped, magnetic sheet metal, rectangular, front, licence plate is roughly, 34cm wide and 22cm tall. Licence plate has a white painted background field with narrow black outer edge stripe and black stencilled registration numerals in two lines with "WH" to top line indicating, Wehrmacht Heer, (Armed Forces Army), followed by six numerals"288716".
