H011595 WINTER ISSUE LONG UNDERWEAR SHIRT. (Winter Unterkleidung)

BACKGROUND: The standard issue, winter underwear set originally consisted of natural, off white, woven cotton/tricot blend long sleeve crew neck T shirt and long pants. Shortly after the out break of the war regulations dictated that the underwear sets were to be dyed to a less visible green shade but the directive was not strictly adhered to. The nature of the material and the weave made both the pants and shirt quite "stretchy" enabling them to fit a variety of different sizes. The winter underwear sets were distributed to all EM/NCO’s for the winter season, (September 15TH to April 15TH), with other winter garments and were to be returned to the units storage depot at the end of the season for reissue the following year. Of Note: Officers and certain senior NCO ranks were responsible for purchasing their own uniform items and as a result were allotted a clothing allowance through the army’s Kleiderkasse, (Clothing Account), system. The Officers and certain senior NCO’s could choose to purchase their uniform items from the armed forces clothing depots or to privately purchase garments of higher quality. Although enlisted personnel were issued their uniforms from government supplies they were also permitted to purchase privately tailored uniform items although the price may have been restrictive. Originally Officers and senior NCO’s responsible for purchasing their own uniform items were required to purchase the winter underwear until regulations of December 1942 extended the issue winter clothing to all ranks in the colder theatres of operation.
