H008996 REMEMBRANCE CARD & PHOTOGRAPH. (Erinnerungskarten und Photographie)

BACKGROUND: A common practice in Europe that continues to this day, is the issue of a remembrance card on the death of a family member. These cards would be distributed to friends and family as a memorial item. Generally the cards were either distributed at the individual’s funeral or, more commonly during the war, at a memorial service or were mailed to friends and family. Basic human instinct dictates that soldiers in the field, regardless of nationality, long for their loved ones at home. As a result it was very common for these soldiers to have themselves photographed and send the photos home. As today, there were also numerous other reasons to pose for a photograph, new appointments, promotions, weddings anniversaries etc., etc..
