H004395 COMBAT ENGINEER'S SHORT WIRE CUTTER CARRYING CASE. (Drahtzange Träger Kasten)

BACKGROUND: Pionier personnel, (Combat Engineers), were issued assorted specialized equipment designed to meet their needs as the spearhead troops tasked with destroying enemy obstacles and creating forward defensive positions for their own troops in the face of the enemy. Besides the engineer’s assault packs, long handle shovels, picks, axes and saws there were two models of wire cutters enabling personnel to cut through barbwire entanglements. The wire cutters came in both a short and a long model and both were issue with a carrying case that was to be worn on the load carrying waist belt. This example is for the short model wire cutters.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Molded, smooth, blackened leather construction, trapezoidal short wire cutter carrying case with magnetic sheet metal fittings and machine stitched seams. The case has a triangular fold over top flap with a machine stitched on, vertical blackened leather closure strap. The closure strap attaches to a leather reinforced, pronged sheet metal roller buckle that is positioned on the front body of the case for a secure closure. Both of the obverse and reverse of the case have three evenly spaced sheet metal rivets positioned near the bottom edge that secure an internal protective sheet metal frame to prevent the wire cutter blades from damaging the case. The reverse of the case has dual machine stitched, vertical blackened leather belt loops. The interior of the top fold over flap is well marked with the faint impressed manufacturers name, location and date "Gustav Sudbruck Bielefeld 1938".
