H002094 CUT-DOWN OFFICER'S SWORD/HILT. (Säbel)

BACKGROUND: The Sword/Sabre is an age old military tradition, that evolved from a functional weapon into an item of uniform dress ornamentation by the start of WWI. This strong tradition continues in many army’s to this day as a symbol of strength and power. After Hitler’s rise to power in 1933 and the reintroduction of conscription in early 1935 a wide variety of new sword and sabre designs were introduced to outfit the rapidly growing Wehrmacht.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Holler production officer’s cut-down saber hilt. Fire gilted tombac, langets, cross guard, ferrule, "P" knuckle bow, back strap and lion head pommel. Obverse langet has an embossed National eagle with its out-spread wings extending out on the cross guard. Cross guard with raised lip to top and bottom edges with small impressed ornamentation and embossed oak-leaf pattern to top. Ferrule, back strap, and "P" knuckle bow all with ornate embossed oak-leaf pattern. Lion head with nice detail and bright red inset glass eyes. Black bakelite grip with wire all intact. The cut-down, 15cm, blade is marked to Holler. Interesting piece.
