14cm x 9cm studio portrait of a German Officer wearing the Turkish Order of the
Medjidie, military class, neck order with crossed swords. The Order
of the Medjidie
(Turkish:
Mecidiye
Nişanı,
August 29, 1852 – 1922) is the name of a military
and knightly
order
of the Ottoman
Empire.
The order was instituted in 1851 by Sultan
Abdulmejid
I
and was awarded for outstanding services to the state by foreign nationals. It
was last awarded in 1917. The officer in the photo also wears the Iron Cross
First Class, the Wound Badge in Black, and an 11-place ribbon bar with 4 other
Ottoman medals, including the Turkish War Medal (The “Gallipoli Star” or
Harp Madalyası in Turkish) ribbon with a crescent moon device. The officer
is posed with his wife and three children, one of whom is a soldier in the Army.
The daughter on the far left appears to be wearing a jewelry clasp depicting a
U-Boat. Fewer than 1,000 people combined received the 1st, 2nd
and 3rd Class awards of the medal worn as a neck order.
